Project Communication Contributes to Corporate Success

Another important contribution to organizational success that project management can make is through improved communication. If the project manager conducts proper communications planning occurs and follows the plan, all aspects of the organization can see how a project is progressing along.

Team members understand the impact of their activities to the project, and ultimately the company, when there are regular status communications on project progress. Resource managers can see the work their employees are producing, and executive management is able to view the impact of the project to the organization in terms of resource usage and expenses.

A project communications plan is a required document for every project manager to complete, regardless of the size of the project. The plan can be as simple as a single page table, or a formal document outlining the planned communication methods and channels. The image below is an example of a simple table format. Anyone can quickly see what types of information is being shared, the method used to share the information, and the person providing the information.

As projects get larger, the communications plan becomes more formal, and usually more detailed. For a free presentation on project communications planning, click here.
